Construction in the Tibeto-Burman family

In Gnang Luang Village, the rites pertaining to the construction of a house are numerous and still respected. Before the house construction, the family, assisted by the extended family, collects construction materials. This requires approximately 1 to 2 months for a team of 10 persons. In general, the village labour helps to transport the materials from the forest to the future site of the house.

The wood (May Cham, May Kalong, May Tro, May Kho Hao) and bamboo (Sang) are felled in November and December by men, while the thatch (imperata “Nha Kha”) is cut in January and February by men and women. Certain varieties of wood are forbidden for construction such as May Sbo, May Game, ay Seumian and May Abu.

The propitious day for construction must be chosen from the days of the Kho calendar. None of them should correspond to the days of birth of each of the living members inhabiting the house. After this first selection, the construction is avoided in the day of the sheep, the day of the monkey or the day of the dragon. The days of the chicken pig, guineapig and dog are considered the best.
